Julie Brewer for Johnson County Commissioner

We’ve endorsed nonprofit executive, Blue Valley parent, and dedicated community volunteer Julie Brewer for the Johnson County Commissioner District 3 seat. Located  in the southeast corner of Johnson County, District 3 covers a large area of Blue Valley.

The Board of County Commissioners is the legislative branch of Johnson County Government, responsible for enacting local legislation to protect, promote and preserve the general public health, safety and welfare, among other duties. County Commissioners are elected to 4-year terms in a nonpartisan election. Julie Brewer has lived in Johnson County with her family for over 12 years; her daughters graduated from Blue Valley Schools, where she was an active volunteer at both the school and district level, including serving as PTO president at BVW. She received a Friend of Education Award from the school district, which is an honor recognizing significant, meaningful service to our schools. She is a strong supporter of public education and understands how our excellent neighborhood schools are vital to the community.

Brewer has worked and volunteered in the fields of public policy and advocacy for her entire adult life. She led United Community Services of Johnson County, a local nonprofit focused on education and advocacy, convening, planning, and resource allocation for initiatives that address the well-being of residents in Johnson County. She has volunteered as a CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocate) and served on the Johnson County Criminal Justice Advisory Council. Her civic engagement and community service resume is too lengthy to list here; read more on her website (below). Julie Brewer knows Johnson County inside and out; she knows what is great and what needs work.

Brewer is running against Charlotte O’Hara, a legendary oppositional personality in Johnson County politics and a longtime opponent of public education. O’Hara has been a vocal denier of the 2020 Presidential election outcome. She has supported JoCo Sheriff Calvin Hayden (an election-denier himself, who was recently defeated in the August Republican primary for Sheriff) in his persistent false claims of voter fraud. As a state legislator back in 2011-13, O’Hara voted for the Brownback tax experiment and continued to support it even after it was an obvious disaster. She voted for the voucher-like Tax Credit Scholarship program and has been an outspoken proponent of vouchers for years.

In 2022, O’Hara unsuccessfully ran against Mike Kelly for Johnson County Board of Commissioners Chair. She was backed by the local Moms For Liberty chapter in that race and has spoken at their meetings. Moms For Liberty is so extreme that the local chapter has even advocated for the removal of VOTING MACHINES here in Johnson County. O’Hara simply does not reflect Blue Valley’s mainstream community values.

We’ve collected some of our FB posts about Brewer’s opponent on our Blog if you care to read more: https://www.standupbluevalley.org/blog/categories/charlotte-o-hara
