SB175, the “Frankenstein Bill” that paired required education funding with expansion of the existing program to give tax money to private schools and create a second one, FAILED this past week in the Kansas Senate on a 20-20 vote. It had passed in the House.
Now, it’s unlikely this will be the end of these problematic ideas this session. Anti-public education legislators are determined to see private schools funded by our tax dollars while taking money from our public schools.
Problem is, legislators had tied the bad ideas to the necessary school funding - so that went down too. They’ll still have to work out a bill that funds our schools.
Here’s how BV-area legislators voted; a NO vote is GOOD for BV Schools.
Voting NO on SB 175 and FOR BV Schools:
Sen. Cindy Holscher (SD 8)
Sen. Robert Olson (SD 23)
Rep. Linda Featherston (HD 16)
Rep. Mari-Lynn Poskin (HD 20)
Rep. Brett Parker (HD 29)
Rep. Jennifer Day (HD 48)
Voting YES on SB 175 and AGAINST BV Schools:
Sen. Kellie Warren (SD 11)
Sen. Moly Baumgardner (SD 37)
Rep. Chris Croft (HD 8)
Rep. Adam Thomas (HD 26)
Rep. Sean Tarwater (HD 27)
Rep. Carl Turner (HD 28)
Rep. Megan Lynn (HD 49)
Rep. Ron Ryckman (HD 78)
