We’ve endorsed former Blue Valley Schools Superintendent and former Kansas Representative Dr. David Benson for House District 27. HD 27 covers the southern area of Blue Valley; BVSW and Blue Valley High Schools are in its boundaries.
Dr. David Benson was the Superintendent of Blue Valley Schools from 1993 to 2004 - an 11-year period when Blue Valley grew by 8,000 students, 2 high schools, 4 middle schools, and 6 elementary schools! He was elected to the Kansas Legislature in 2018, where he served for 2 years (2019-20) before moving out of the area. Now Benson has returned to his Blue Valley home, where his experience and incredible knowledge base will again make him an outstanding legislator.
While serving in the legislature, Benson supported Gov. Kelly’s plan to fund public schools with an inflation adjustment - helping Kansas recover from the Brownback & Co. fiasco. He voted against a disastrous tax bill that would have underfunded public schools yet again. He stood with the Blue Valley Board of Education’s key legislative positions, voting against a bad bill that combined harmful policy with not funding our schools. Benson also voted AGAINST using tax dollars to fund private schools.
Benson is running against incumbent Sean Tarwater. When Tarwater first ran in 2016, he claimed that he supported public education; he claimed opposition to voucher-style programs. With these claims, he earned Stand Up Blue Valley’s endorsement - which was withdrawn after he started VOTING as a legislator. During his time in KsLeg, Tarwater has frequently voted against Blue Valley students and against the legislative positions of our elected School Board. He has voted to send tax money to private schools and for reckless, Brownback-like tax cuts that would have caused funding cuts to our schools. Tarwater even voted against fully funding Special Education, a critical funding need in Blue Valley. Tarwater has an “A” rating from the NRA and has publicly stated that he supports arming teachers.
