NRA “grades” for the 2024 general election haven’t come out yet, but here’s our post from 2022 on the subject. Some of these people are running for election again this year. (That 2022 post has a link to the NRA’s Candidate Questionnaire - so you can read what it takes to get a NRA “A” grade.)
In 2021, NRA-backed Kansas lawmakers voted* to allow 18- to 20-year-olds to carry concealed, loaded handguns in public, including on college and university campuses. Gov. Laura Kelly (a 2A supporter) thought that went too far - but lawmakers overrode her veto.
Here are the BV-area Legislators running for reelection in 2024 who voted to ALLOW 18 year olds to conceal-carry weapons on Kansas college campuses (and anywhere in public):
Sen. Kellie Warren
Rep. Chris Croft
Rep. Sean Tarwater
Rep. Carl Turner
Since the 2022 election, these NRA-backed candidates have continued working to earn their gun-lobby endorsement. Warren, Croft, Tarwater, and Turner voted to require Kansas schools to use an NRA-produced and owned non-evidence-based program on firearm education:
We don’t claim to have all the answers to the gut-wrenching gun violence problem in America and in our schools. We DO believe that requiring schools to allow armed teachers and staff (other than SROs and LE) - as the NRA proposes - is not the answer. Requiring schools to allow just anyone to carry a loaded gun onto campus is NOT the answer. Legislators requiring locally-elected School Boards to use NRA-developed curriculum - as Warren, Croft, Tarwater, and Turner voted - is NOT the answer.
We’ll post about the 2024 NRA “grades” when they are published. Until then, if a candidate knocks on your door, ask them about these important gun-safety issues. And plan to take your thoughts and prayers with you to the polls. Advance voting in Johnson County begins Wed., Oct. 16. Election Day is Tues., Nov. 5.
